since feeling is first

As I code interviews for a research project, I am continually challenged by the slipperiness of meaning.  While librarians are all about “aboutness” and assigning subject headings, we’re kind of lousy at capturing the essence of things, which is why so many people would prefer to do the full-text searching that Google allows for. (Of course, full-text doesn’t always capture the essence of things either…)

Anyway, I’l let e.e. speak for me on this one (even with the added romanticism, he captures ineffability better than I do):

since feeling is first
who pays any attention
to the syntax of things
will never wholly kiss you;
wholly to be a fool
while Spring is in the world

my blood approves,
and kisses are a better fate
than wisdom
lady i swear by all flowers. Don’t cry
—the best gesture of my brain is less than
your eyelids’ flutter which says

we are for each other: then
laugh, leaning back in my arms
for life’s not a paragraph

And death i think is no parenthesis
